Mipro to deliver the interlocking system for West Metro in Helsinki, Finland

The contract covers the interlocking and operation control systems, and also the passenger information system for the section Ruoholahti–Matinkylä.

Mipro has entered into an agreement with the Helsinki City Transport operator HKL and Länsimetro to deliver the interlocking system for West Metro (Länsimetro), the Western metro extension from central Helsinki to the neighboring town of Espoo. The contract covers the interlocking and operation control systems, and also the passenger information system for the section Ruoholahti–Matinkylä. The total value of the delivery is 19.7 million euros. The contract includes an option for corresponding systems to be delivered for the current Helsinki metro and Länsimetro extension as well.

For the control of West Metro, Mipro will deliver its interlocking system that meets the highest requirements set for safety related systems for railways. The computer-based interlocking system is developed for applications used to control and manage high-frequency and demanding rail operations. The system enables various traffic and operation modes and rail operating in both directions. Mipro’s interlocking system controls and notifies status data of all track equipment on the said traffic section and thus ensures a reliable control and monitoring of the rail traffic.

Mipro’s operation control system is based on modern computer technology and developed for rail traffic management. Third-party systems installed on the traffic areas can be connected to the system in a manner that data related to the traffic control and monitoring can be transmitted through the working places of the operation control system for the disposal of the dispatchers. Automatic route setting and controlling, and train numbers of the operation control system function consistently at the system level.

Mipro Oy’s managing director Juha Nurmi says that the West Metro interlocking system delivery is highly significant for Mipro. ”It is a breakthrough for a new business area and an excellent reference for international markets as well. Our experience of over 20 years in interlocking and traffic control system deliveries for railways provides a strong basis to be a global supplier of safety related systems for metro traffic as well.”

West Metro is considered Finland's largest infrastructure project. In the first phase, a rail line of 14 kilometres from Ruoholahti to Matinkylä will be completed including eight new stations. Koivusaari and Lauttasaari stations will be located in Helsinki, and Keilaniemi, Aalto University, Tapiola, Urheilupuisto, Niittykumpu, and Matinkylä will be located in Espoo. After the completion of the project, the metro line will serve over 100,000 passengers a day. The operation on the new line will start in August 2016.
